My Instagram Feed is Showing Old Posts

If you've noticed your Instagram app has been displaying content posted days or weeks ago, you're not the only one. Many users have reported that the app fails to bring up new posts and brings up older content instead.

How To Fix Instagram Only Showing Old Posts

This article will discuss why this issue is occurring and how to resolve it. Keep reading to learn more.

Instagram Only Showing Old Posts

Instagram is one of the most popular social media platforms. One of the reasons for that is how reliable it is at showing you fresh, interesting content. Although the app has remained relatively glitch-free, it encounters the occasional bug that may disrupt your user experience. Therefore, it seems natural to assume a minor glitch is interfering with your Instagram feed and highlighting older posts.

But that's always not the case.

The feed disturbance is usually a result of the platform's algorithm. Essentially, it's the platform's way of ensuring you're up to date with what your friends and other followed accounts are posting.

Instagram features a personalized algorithm that analyzes your follower history and scans which posts you comment on and like. The algorithm sometimes pushes older posts to the top of your feed, boosting their visibility. It's a convenient solution for users who don't often check the accounts they follow for updates. The algorithm helps them catch up with their favorite news outlet, celebrity, or small business.

According to Instagram, the algorithm operates on four factors that help it determine how to rank posts in your feed. The criteria are as follows:

  • Your interest in specific content
  • The date of upload
  • Your previous communication with the poster
  • Your Instagram Favorites

Instagram processes what type of content you've been browsing, liking, and saving. It then uses this information to recommend content it believes you'll like.

For example, if you've spent days exploring cooking accounts to find new recipe ideas, food-related content will likely flood your suggested feed soon. Also, you might regularly communicate with your best friend on Instagram but fail to like a post. Thanks to the personalized algorithm, the post will probably appear as soon as you open the app.

Similarly, when you add an account to your Instagram Favorites list, their uploads rank higher than content from other profiles.

How to Fix Instagram Only Showing Old Posts

There are two ways to prevent old posts from rising to the top of your feed. You can switch to a chronological feed or wipe the Instagram cache on your mobile device.

Method 1: Enable Chronological Feed on Instagram

Instagram has implemented two types of chronological feeds. The first one is Following, while the other is Favorites. If you select the Following option, you'll see posts from accounts you follow in chronological order, reminiscent of the app's layout when it first launched.

You can include up to 50 accounts in your Favorites feed and view their uploads from latest to oldest. Note that you can only add profiles you're already following.

Enabling the chronological feed on Instagram is relatively straightforward. Here's what you need to do on your Android device to activate this feature:

  1. Make sure you're using the latest version of the Instagram app. You can do that by checking your Google App Store for updates.
  2. Launch the app and press the Instagram logo in the upper-left part of the interface.
  3. A drop-down menu will present you with two options: Favorites and Following.
  4. Choose "Following" to revert to a chronological feed.

After enabling this feature, the app will display newer posts at the top of your feed, while older posts will be further down.

Follow the steps below to tweak the app on your iPhone and view content in chronological order:

  1. Check whether you're using the latest Instagram version on the App Store.
  2. Open the app and select the Instagram logo in the upper left.
  3. A drop-down menu will generate two options: Favorites and Following.
  4. Pick "Following" to modify your feed.

The app will ensure that the latest posts show up first, and you'll have to scroll down to view older content.

Method 2: Clear the Cache

If, for some reason, your mobile app isn't working correctly, you can try clearing the cache to improve its performance. The action might also prevent content from accounts you don't follow from entering your feed.

Follow the below instructions to clear the Instagram cache on your Android smartphone:

  1. Launch Instagram and enter your profile.
  2. Select "Your Activity and press the "Recent Searches" option.
  3. Select "Clear All."

Here's how you can wipe the cache on your iPhone:

  1. Open Instagram and go to your profile.
  2. Select "Your Activity and press the "Recent Searches" option.
  3. Select "Clear All."

Take Control of Your Feed

Although many users assume a bug is interfering with their Instagram feed and highlighting older posts, the algorithm is likely pushing suggested content. Fortunately, you can adjust the feed and switch to a chronological ranking on your Android device or iPhone. If you suspect a temporary glitch is disrupting the app, try clearing the cache to resolve the issue.
